Karin Waskiewicz (b. 1988) was born in Erie, Pennsylvania. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art from Kent State University and her Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts from University of Iowa. She currently works and lives in New York, NY. In addition to making art, she is also an Art conservator for a private practice paper conservation studio.
She has had solo shows at FORMah Gallery, NYC (2023), Margaret Thatcher Projects, NYC (2022), Darci Gallery, NY (2016), Levitt Gallery and Iowa City, IA (2014). Her work has been included in collections and exhibitions across the country.
Her paintings are made of multiple layers of acrylic paint, before she carves back into the built-up surface with woodcarving tools. This process of sedimentation and erasure, covering and uncovering, transforms the layers of paint into three-dimensional woven textures. She intuitively carves and chips away the surface, revealing layers and hidden images underneath. Her practice is much like that of an archeologist, excavating the surfaces of her paintings to expose fragments of time.
